Don "The Spoiler" Jardine died last night after a long battle with leukemia. Jardine, as "The Spoiler" was one of the most famous masked wrestlers of the 60's and 70's and was well known of his "claw" finisher.
Jardine was successful all over the country appearing for most of the top territories of the day. He was best known as "The Spoiler", but also appeared later in his career as "The Super Destroyer".
Jardine was innovative and worked an unusual style for a big man, walking the ropes long before The Undertaker. His version of the claw saw him use a gloved hand applied to the opponents forehead making them bleed and pass out. The move was censored on television in many areas, which added to the mystique of the hold.
When Jardine wrestled in New York City at Madison Square Garden, he did so as "The Spoiler"...but without his mask. New York, at the time, had a rule barring masked wrestlers. The first masked wrestler to appear at Madison Square Garden. In a strange twist, his opponent in the match was Jardine who wrestled without the mask.
It's unfortunate that many of today's fans never had a chance to see Jardine wrestle. He was one of the best.
Our condolences go out to his wife Becky and to his family and friends.
